NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Every child who plays sports games has to create themselves and play their character in the game. For girls, selecting a character wasn't so easy since their options were only men. But now, thanks to a North Tonawanda high schooler, girls can play in the new "NHL 12."
Lexi Peters wanted to create her girls hockey team in the EA Sports NHL game, but she found she could only create men. Lexi decided this wasn't fair wrote to EA Sports.
"We were playing and we said we should make girls in EA Sports and said it just joking around and she said, 'Well, we should write a letter.' So then I wrote the letter, sent it in, and we got a note that said they couldn't do it. Then we got an e-mail a few weeks later that said they loved the idea and they wanted to use me in the game," explained Lexi.
Lexi and her family had only seen pictures, but News 4 was able to find a video that showed her character in the game.
In the game, Lexi has pigtails - which she doesn't have in real life. Lexi said, "They needed it to fit under the helmet. So they fixed around the hair and stuff."
Her hair may not be the same, but Lexi's dad says you can easily tell it is her.
"Everybody that sees it knows right away, 'Wow! That's Lexi!' So yeah, it looks like Lexi. She's is a lot prettier than the computer version, but it does it looks a lot like her," said Tim Peters.
Lexi is a freshman at Star Point High School and is in her fifth year of playing hockey, a tradition that runs in the family.
Lexi said, "I had grown up with them and they all play hockey, all the boys, and my brother does. I went to all of his games and I just like the environment around there and I just always wanted to play."
Lexi was very humble about having her image used in "NHL 2012." She didn't want to brag and didn't tell too many people that she would be in the game when she found out back in February.
