LEWISTON, N.Y. (WIVB) - Residents turned out in force Monday night, to stand in support of the Lewiston Village Police.
A proposal to drop the village police department met with vocal opposition during a packed public hearing.
One resident said, "Criminals don't punch a clock. It's not like you and I come in the same time every day. I'm a criminal, you're a cop. We come in the same hours ever day, punch a clock and then leave at the end of the shift. It doesn't happen that way. Law enforcement is 24/7, criminals are 24/7."
Another Lewiston resident added, "When you moved the police station to Creek Road, that was the last time we saw the police, on Oneida Street. We never see the police in the village."
The Lewiston Village Board revisits the issue in two weeks.
