Trooper pays to replace woman's mailbox

YOUNGSTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) - A state trooper had no leads in a Niagara County case, and decided to take matters into his own hands.

Someone damaged an elderly woman's mailbox in the Niagara County Town of Youngstown on Monday. Trooper Ed Stefik investigated, but couldn't make any headway in the case. Using his own money, Stefik paid for a new mailbox and installed it himself on Wednesday.

"It's just the right thing to do," he said. "Any one of us would have done the same thing. She was a nice woman who needed help and that is why we do what we do. It was the right thing to do."

The woman tried to pay Stefik for the mailbox, but he refused.
