HOLLEY, N.Y. (WIVB) - A soldier from Orleans County is fighting for his life after receiving third degree burns over 60 percent of his body.
Twenty-one-year-old Cody Raymond Coopenberg of Holley was refueling a generator in Afghanistan when it exploded, burning his face, arms and chest. Coopenberg was flown to Germany and then to Brooks Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. There is no word on what caused the explosion.
Coopenberg is a graduate of Holley High School. His wife, Hannah, and his mother are in Texas by his side. On Facebook, his mom wrote that Coopenberg is being kept in a room that no visitors are allowed in, to prevent infection. She said he did respond when Hannah spoke to him, but that he is still heavily medicated. She added, "They are the best in the world for burn care and everyone is taking great care of him."
