AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) - The United States Postal Service is giving customers some big incentives to stay home this holiday season.
The postal service wants you to avoid the long lines at the post office and they're offering some savings and extra conveniences to those who log-on and do their mailing from home.
Santa Claus took time out from his work at the North Pole to join in Tuesday's online demonstration at the North Bailey Post Office in Amherst.
Customers can log-on, print their postage and even get a discount of between three and 10 percent on the shipping.
Need more incentive? The postal service will send free shipping boxes to Priority and Express customers.
Western New York Communications Coordinator Karen Mazurkiewicz said, "The best rate is online. For the first time ever, our online packaging prices are less than if you bring something into the post office. So not only do you get the convenience of staying home; you get to save money."
"If you print the postage online and put it on the package you can make a reservation with your carrier to pick it up the next day. And you tell 'em how many packages and where they're gonna be and he or she will grab them when he comes to your house."
