DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB) - A 56-year-old man is lucky to be alive after falling off his boat and treading water for hours in Lake Erie late Thursday afternoon.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff's office reports Daniel Ruggiero of Angola fell off his boat somewhere between Dunkirk and Barcelona in Lake Erie around 2:30 Thursday afternoon while reaching for one of his fishing poles that had slipped from its holder. The boat was still in gear and ended up running aground five nautical miles east of Barcelona Harbor. A concerned citizen saw the boat and called the U.S. Coast Guard to report it.
The Coast Guard and the Chautauqua County Sheriff's marine unit began an immediate search. The marine unit located Ruggiero a mile offshore after hearing a scream for help. He was taken to Westfield Hospital, and will be transported to another hospital later.
