Gowanda readies for potential flooding

GOWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Gowanda community knows the harsh reality of flooding, and they're preparing as Hurricane Sandy approaches the East Coast.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said, "We have been watching the weather forecasts and we are going to declare a state of emergency in every county in the state."

With the forecasted rainfall amounts to exceed four-inches in most of western New York, towns are preparing themselves for the potentials of flooding.

Gowanda Fire Chief Steve Raiport said, "Preparations have basically getting all of our equipment ready. Pre-warning residents here and there. Highway crews have been out there maintaining the storm sewers and picking up leaves."

The town's main concerns are the smaller creeks and streams of the area which flooded back in 2009. Crews have plans in place and residents know what to expect if things get bad.

"You never know with the potential with the fall and the leaves with everything else that are coming down through that get washed down. They get snagged in debris and stuff like that and can cause a dam," Chief Raiport said.

Gowanda Mayor Heather McKeever added, "In reference to talking to the residents, I would just like to make sure to take any preventative measures for any storm in cleaning out their storm drains. Simple things like that can really help any type of damage that could happen."

One of the other concerns along with the creeks and streams is the drainage areas along roadways, because we could see some street flooding if something like this gets clogged with all the leaves that have been falling.

If you do experience flooding in your home, move to higher area in your home and call 911. Generators should be left outside, and if your basement becomes flooded be aware of the water potentially being electrified by your electrical box.

And if needed, the Town of Gowanda has swift water rescue teams ready.
