STOCKTON, N.Y. (WIVB) - Water rescue crews were called to South Cassadaga Road near Stockton to rescue a trapped elderly couple in a submerged vehicle.
Chautauqua County Sheriff's deputies say 83-year-old John Vanscoter's car stalled out while he was trying to cross the flooded roadway. Vanscoter had ignored barricades and signs and drove into three-feet of water with his 82-year-old wife inside the vehicle with him.
Firefighters rescued Vanscoter and his wife Constance as the rising waters began to pull the car in the quick-moving current. Vanscoter owns the former Cockaigne Ski Resort in Cherry Creek, which has been closed since a fire gutted the ski lodge two years ago this week.
Both Vanscoter and his wife were rushed to Brooks Hospital in Dunkirk with non-life threatening injuries. Deputies have charged him with failing to obey a traffic control device.
