SALAMANCA, N.Y. (WIVB) - It's a stretch of busy highway many drivers describe as "Swiss cheese."

Drivers will be happy to know construction is getting underway along the 11.5 mile portion of the Southern Tier Expressway through Seneca Territory, from the Allegany Casino to Red House. The work right now will focus on bridges and culverts. A major repaving will start next year.

The rough highway has been at the center of a debate between the Seneca Nation of Indians the state for some time.
