BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - From concerns over high taxes to worries about losing your job, the state of the struggling economy can really put your stress limit to the test.

So how do you know when it may be time to get some help?

Most of us are feeling some stress related to the economy, and for some, the worrying results in serious anxiety or depression.

If that continues for two weeks or longer, you should first contact your physician.

"There are numerous medical conditions that can trigger anxiety, so ruling those out is always an important thing to do. make sure you're physically okay."

Mental health professionals like Marcy Brimo help people change their behavior to improve their emotional state. Maintaining or resuming a normal routine is very important, especially if you've been laid off.

"If you're used to working all the time, and you end up without a job, a sense of worthlessness can happen and can grow, so put yourself to a task, even if you're just around the house, cleaning up the yard."

One of her recent patients had a typical outcome.

"When she put back in place those normal things, and exercising, after a few weeks, she began to feel much better and at that point really didn't qualify for a depression or anxiety diagnosis, so she didn't need medication."

If you know someone who's become anxious, depressed or withdrawn lately, say so.

There's help available.

Awareness and encouragement might be the beginning of that person's recovery.
