BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - An Erie County grand jury will now take up the case of two teenagers accused of killing a West Seneca teen early Christmas morning.
15-year-old Anthony Echevarria and 18-year-old Miguel Toro-Torres waived their rights to felony hearings Tuesday. They have both been charged as adults with murder and attempted murder.
Police say the suspects thought they were targeting rival gang members when they shot 18-year-old Sarah Ernst of West Seneca, and an acquaintance, outside a home on 14th Street.
Ernst did not survive.
Police are asking us to conceal the faces of both suspects while the investigation continues. the teens' loved ones packed the courtroom Tuesday and were not happy to see the media.
Toro-Torres' attorney Andrew Lotempio said, "It is emotionally charged. We're talking about young kids who don't know how to control their emotions."
Echevarria's attorney Robert Convissar said, "His parents are very upset. His mother and stepfather live with him. It's a stable family and it's a tragic situation all the way around."
15-year-old Anthony Echevarria is being held at the East Ferry Detention Center. His co-defendant remains locked up Tuesday night at the holding center downtown.
