Protesters fuming over noxious fumes

ATTICA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Protesters are putting up a stink over a terrible odor that's making life miserable for residents in Attica.

Residents have been speaking out about the foul fumes and Friday, they took their concerns right to the steps of the business they hold responsible: Hillcrest Industries. Demonstrators claim burning plastics inside an enormous pile of glass are releasing nuisance emissions into the air near the recycling facility.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation ruled the air is safe, but residents are not convinced. Now the Environmental Protection Agency is taking the lead in the investigation.

Don Eichelberger said, "It's just getting worse. This is out of control. This has been burning for more than two months and the DEC just got around to letting us know this pile was on fire. They failed to inform our emergency management services. They didn't let anybody know. They know this has been burning for months now."

Protesters want to see Hillcrest Industries shut down.
