BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - On Thursday, Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda spoke to media outlets regarding the search for Dr. Timothy Jorden, a person of interest in the shooting of 33-year-old Jackie Wisniewski at the Miller building on the ECMC campus.
What follows is a transcript of that press conference:
Derenda: "We continue to look for Dr. Timothy Jorden. He's a person of interest in yesterday's homicide at ECMC of 33-year old Jacqueline Wisniewski. Right now we are working with our state, local and federal partners to locate Mr. Jorden. We want to talk to him about yesterday's homicide. We conducted, yesterday, we conducted a search warrant at his home and he was not there, some other items were taken as evidence. Right now we're just continuing to search for him. Right now we have a nationwide bulletin out for him, and we're looking to talk to him as soon as possible. We're asking the public or anyone with information to call our tipline at 847-2255. Or Buffalo Police homicide at 851-4468. If the public does come across or see Mr. Jorden, I would ask that they call 911 immediately. He may be armed he may be dangerous, at this point we are looking to talk to him. There's not a lot about the investigation I can talk about, but I will take questions."
Question: Will Officer Martin Motley face criminal charges?
Derenda "Right now, uh, it's under investigation. We don't know, we're still investigating why he was there. So there are some possible departmental charges coming but other than criminal charges I can't, can't say at this point."
Question: Did Motley have a gun with him?
Derenda: "He had a gun belonging to him, it was not the service revolver."
Question: Was it one of his own?
Derenda: "It was one of his own guns, yes."
Question: Why is Jorden just a person of interest?
Derenda: "He is a person of interest, and we want to speak to him about his actions yesterday."
Question: That implies there are others...
Derenda: "You can apply what you think it applies, but he is the person of interest, as we said yesterday we believe it was not a random act, but again I won't go into details of the investigation. He's a person of interest somebody we want to talk to. We're working with the state, federal, local federal partners, we've notified everybody. There's a nationwide pickup out for him, that we want to talk to him. He's a person of interest."
Question: Why are you having such a hard time tracking him down?
Derenda: "Again, he's out there somewhere, it's not that we're having a hard time it's that at some point we will locate him. We're making every effort to do so and we'll get him in here to talk to him as soon as possible."
Question: Is is possible Jorden is in Canada?
Derenda: "We know for a fact he did not cross the border."
Question: Why did you wait so long to reveal his identity?
Derenda: "His face and name were out there probably before we even left the scene yesterday. Again we're in the middle of an investigation. He's a person of interest and where we felt it was appropriate, to release his name and picture we did so. But the press was doing that hours before, uh, we did."
Question: Has the District Attorney been involved and is there an arrest warrant?
Derenda: "We are working closely with the District Attorney's office, [Assistant] DA Jim Bargnese just left my office five minutes before you guys got here. Again we're working on this case together with our partners, the DA's office, and at this point we are seeking him as a person of interest. No warrant at this time."
Question: Is the FBI involved with this case?
Derenda: "We have been in discussions with the FBI, we had a meeting just a short time ago and other partners, law enforcement partners. And they are assisting in whatever way they can in this investigation. It'll be put out that he is wanted for questioning in a person of interest with Buffalo Police homicide so if an officer stops him in a car stop in Rhode Island, in Massachusetts, anywhere, it'll pop up that we want to talk to him."
Question: Do you have a warrant for his arrest?
Derenda: "No we don't."
Question: Do you have a description of a vehicle?
Derenda: "His vehicles are accounted for, we don't know if he is driving, what he is driving at this point. We believe he is still in the United States, yeah."
Question: Is there any reason you believe that?
Derenda: "I'm not going to go into those details right now."
Question: Is Motley his accomplice?
Derenda: "I'm not gonna say that, no. Right now it's we're just investigating to why he was there, I would not call him an accomplice, no."
Question: Then why was Motley there?
Derenda: "I'm not gonna go into... Again, it's under investigation right now, I'm not gonna go into those details."
Question: Jorden is military trained. What precautions are being taken?
Derenda: "Again he's a person of interest - everybody's been made aware of his training, his background, so when an individual officer approaches, they'll take proper
precautions."
Question: Does he have any registered firearms?
Derenda: "No."
Question: What did you recover from the scene?
Derenda: "We did get evidence from cameras at the hospital but other than that I won't say more."
Question: Has the victim's family helped at all?
Derenda: "No comment."
Question: Should the public be worried?
Derenda: "I don't think the general public is in danger. Again an officer coming across this individual again he has to be considered armed and dangerous but we want to talk to him about yesterday's incident and that's all we'll say right now. I don't think he's a danger to the public at large."
Question: How many guns does Jorden have?
Derenda: "He does not have guns registered to him."
Question: Is anyone with him, possibly a missing secretary?
Derenda: "Not that I'm aware of."
Question: When will Jorden become a suspect?
Derenda: "He's a person of interest, we'll bring him in for questioning, at that point we'll make a determination whether an arrest will be made. The gun when it is recovered will be processed."
Question: Have you notified Border Patrol?
Derenda: "They've all been notified and is the best to my knowledge, he has not crossed the border."
Question: Is Jorden suffering from a physical/mental illness?
Derenda: "No comment."
Question: Why should the public not be worried?
Derenda: "Again, he's out there, he's a person of interest, I don't believe he's a general threat to the public, this was a targeted incident that took place. It was not a random act. But again he should be considered armed and dangerous at this point."
Question: Is anyone else out there?
Derenda: "No comment."
Question: Do you have a motive?
Derenda: "Can't say."
Question: Did he leave any notes?
Derenda: "Ummmm."
Question: Are you using any lessons learned from the Bucky Phillips case?
Derenda: "All our resources. We've touched on every, every thing, every resource that's out there we're utilizing at this point to bring him in to talk to him."
Question: How much manpower is out there?
Derenda: "We're doing everything we can to bring the doctor in for questioning."
Question: Can you give us a timeline of what happened?
Derenda: "Can't comment."
Question: Is this the continuance of a domestic violence situation?
Derenda: "I don't believe there were any order of protections involving the victim. I can't comment on a motive right now."
Question: Is the doctor's house under surveillance?
Derenda: "They're still out there now, still under the search warrant, we're still doing some things out there, this morning, so that we still have some officers on scene."
Question: Is anyone aiding Jorden?
Derenda: "Somebody could be helping him, we don't know."
Question: Is he still in the area?
Derenda: "No comment."
Question: Is he still alive?
Derenda: "Don't know."
Question: Was this planned or was this spontaneous?
Derenda: "As I said, it's not a random act. Cheektowaga had a couple reports of domestic incidents but not with the victim. I'm not aware of any domestic reports with our victim."
Question: What is Motley's status?
Derenda: "He's injured on duty status."
Question: And what's the state of that investigation?
Derenda: "Again, our both internal affairs is looking into why he was there, and out of confinement, and homicide's still talking to him about why he was there also."
