ESPN analysts have theories on next head coach

Now that the Buffalo Bills have sent Dick Jauron packing, the team has a decision to make about who will be their long-term coach.

How much is Ralph Wilson willing to spend for a new head coach who could actually take the Bills to the playoffs and maybe even the Superbowl?

And what if money weren't an object?

After 10 years of not making the playoffs, many fans are hoping Wilson's next big play might best be focused on a half dozen winning head coaches no longer with their former teams. Mike Shanahan's name keeps surfacing. He coached Denver to two winning Superbowls, but former Steeler's Superbowl-winning coach Bill Cowher, now a CBS analyst, is the choice of ESPN football analyst Mark Schlereth.

"He's got that attitude, he's got that toughness about him. His teams play with that kind of that swagger and that bravado, and that to me is what you are missing in Buffalo right now and that's what needs to be established," said Schlereth.

If you want to win in this league, said Schlereth, you better be willing to pay.

But with fired head coach Dick Jauron still owed $6 million, many believe Ralph Wilson won't pay big time money for big name coaches.

ESPN analyst John Clayton said, "That's why I think that Jim Haslett is going to emerge as at least one of the main candidates because of the fact that he's been in the organization, I think there's a thrust there, a good feeling there in the organization for him, and I think there's a possibility the fans could jump on that."

With Perry Fewell now named Bills interim head coach, some big names are reluctant to say even whether they would consider an offer.

Brian Billick, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens said, "For any coach to comment on their interest in a job that currently has a coach is inappropriate."

Schlereth told News 4 that a new head coach will have to shake things up and develop a new attitude. He said everyone should be put on notice and rebuilding should start from the top down. Players, he said will either have to "get with the program, or be gone."
