BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - Canisius High School lineman John Urschel has made a verbal committment to play football at Penn State. Urschel made his decision during a visit to State College this past weekend. He will officially sign his letter of intent on February 4.
"I really like their blend of academics and athletics. I though it would be a good fit for me," said Urshel, "I got to see Beaver Stadium (on his recent visit) where they fit more than a hundred-thousand people. That's gonna be a crazy experience."
Urschel did meet legendary Nittany Lions head coach Joe Paterno on his visit.
The 6-4, 275 lineman was the winner of the Trench Trophy, given to WNY's top lineman. Urschel played offensive tackle and defensive tackle for the Crusaders. He helped his team finish 6-4 this season.
Urshel considered Boston College, Stanford, UB and Ivy League schools Princeton and Cornell.
Amherst HS grad Mark Rubin just completed his career as a safety at Penn State.
