BOSTON (WIVB) - The Sabres goal was to not lose two games in a row the entire season. 14 games in, the team will need another goal. The Sabres lose to the Bruins in Boston, 4-2. Rookie goalie Jhonas Enroth made his NHL debut, in relief of Ryan Miller, who was given the night off. Enroth gave up a goal on the very first shot he faced. He winds up allowing 4 goals on 37 shots.
Mark Recchi's deflection gave Boston a 1-0 lead in the first. That power play goal was followed by another, on a big blast by Zdeno Chara. Boston led 2-0 at the end of the first.
In the second, a Bruins goal by Byron Bitz made it 3-0, before Buffalo finally scored. Derek Roy's third goal in the last three games made it 3-1. Roy was assisted by Craig Rivet and Clarke MacArthur.
But Marco Sturm upped the Boston lead back to three goals when he scored late in the period.
Jason Pominville scored late in the game, just after the contest turned ugly. Paul Gaustad, Jochen Hecht, Patrick Kalet and Rivet were involved in minor brawls.
The Sabres had 30 shots, and Bruins backup goalie Tuukka Rask made xx saves. The struggling Sabres power play was 0/8.
Enroth, the 21-year-old former second round draft pick, was in the lineup because regular backup Patrick Lalime is out with a groin injury. His nicest save came in the first, when former Sabres Daniel Paille had a breakaway chance out of the penalty box.
The Sabres are now 9-4-1 this season. They play at home Wednesday against Edmonton.
