Secondary playing well

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WIVB) - Safety Jairus Byrd set the tone early in tonight's practice, delivering a hit to Derek Hagan under the lights at St. John Fisher.

It was one of the first contact plays in camp, and illustrated how well the defense has been playing through the first week of Bills training camp.

"They are doing a good job," said Head Coach Chan Gailey. "The defensive backs are seeing a lot of things and reacting to the routes they are seeing a lot of. They are doing a good job of picking up on those things."

Byrd led the way Wednesday night, making several big plays against the first-team offense.

The second-team offensive unit struggled, which caught Gailey's eye.

"The twos in general are not performing very well offensively. I think our ones are doing some good things. But our twos are struggling offensively," said Gailey.

The Bills return to practice Thursday at 3pm.

Notes: LB Kelvin Sheppard did not practice. Gailey says he will miss a couple days with a medical issue.
