KANSAS CITY (WIVB) - Wow. That's all you can say about the Bills season opening, 41-7 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs. Facing low expectations from Bills fans, the team blew those away with an impressive and dominating victory.
Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four touchdown passes. Fred Jackson ran for 112 yards. Tight end Scott Chandler caught two touchdown passes. The run defense held the Chiefs to just 101 yards, well below the 274 the Bills allowed in a game last year.
The 41 points scored are the most in a season opener since 1975.
The Bills special teams forced a fumble on the opening kickoff, and scored touchdown on a Fitzpatrick pass to Chandler for a 7-0 lead. Fitzpatrick hit Stevie Johnson on a 27 yard score to up the lead to 14-0. Two Rian Lindell field goals and a KC score made it a 20-7 halftime score.
In the third quarter, Fitzpatrick threw another TD to Chandler and one to Donald Jones. Following a Drayton Florence interception, C.J. Spiller scored the Bills final touchdown.
Fitzpatrick was 17-28 for 208 yards. He threw one interception and was sacked just once behind the oft-criticized Buffalo offensive line.
The Bills forced three turnovers.
They host the Raiders next Sunday.
