GLENDALE, Ariz. (WIVB) - The Bills went to Arizona in desperate need of a bounce-back game, and while it wasn't always pretty, they got it. Buffalo rode a strong defensive performance to a 19-16 overtime win over the Cardinals Sunday.
The game didn't start as planned, with Fred Jackson fumbling on the Bills' first snap. Arizona took over with great field position, and turned it into a field goal for an early 3-0 lead.
Buffalo's defense held strong, coming up with a safety when Chris Kelsay sacked Kevin Kolb in the end zone.
The Bills took their first lead when C.J. Spiller found the end zone from ten yards out late in the first quarter, giving Buffalo a 9-3 lead.
Arizona countered with a nine yard strike from Kolb to Larry Fitzgerald for a 10-9 halftime lead.
Another field goal would make it 13-9, before the Bills mounted a big drive late in the third quarter. Spiller ripped off a 33-yard run to kick-start the offense. Brad Smith followed it up with a run that took the ball to the goal-line, before Fred Jackson finished the drive with a one-yard score, giving the Bills a 16-13 lead after the third quarter.
It looked like the Bills were driving down the field for another score, before Brad Smith threw an interception out of the wildcat that shifted momentum back to Arizona.
After Kevin Kolb left the game with an injury, John Skelton came on to drive the Cardinals into field goal range. Jay Feely then connected from 61 yards out to tie the game at 16.
He had a chance to win it as time expired, but this time his field goal attempt bounced off the upright to force overtime.
Jairus Byrd intercepted Skelton on Arizona's first drive of OT and returned it to the seven yard line, giving Rian Lindell an easy 25 yard field goal to win it for Buffalo.
After struggling the last two weeks, the Bills' defense stepped up this afternoon, piling up five sacks, a safety, and two interceptions - both by Byrd. Buffalo improves to 3-3 on the season, and will return home to face the Titans next week.
