Ralph Wilson Stadium - Bobby April has had an unprecedented six year run of success, as the Bills Special Teams Coordinator. But that run is over.
April was one of the assistants set free by the team on Monday. He's decided to exercise a clause in his contract right away, and begin looking for his next job.
April talked to News 4 Sports in a one-on-one interview.
"Let me say this about coaching," April told us. "There are no bad days in coaching. There's only different degrees of good days."
Most of the days have been good for April over the years. But he says he is definitely ready to move on. April was considered a possible candidate for the Bills interim head coach job when Dick Jauron was fired in mid-November. And he says he wanted the job.
"I definitely wanted ..want to be a head coach. Definitely. That's a career goal, thats an ongoing goal of mine. And my feelings about not being selected here, I expressed to Russ Brandon. He knows how I feel about it, and I'm going to leave it at that."
We asked April if he expected to be named the interim coach?
" I thought I had a good chance," he said.
April says despite his disappointment, he leaves the Bills on
good terms.
"I'm very grateful. I dont have a beef with anybody. I certainly, if that's a goal twenty years ago, I haven't stopped having it as a goal. Certainly I want to be a head coach, and I obviously will not be one here. So, I need to pursue the path of being a head coach.""
April's special teams were extra special--at our near the top of the NFL rankings in every one of his six years in Buffalo. They''ll be ranked in the top five again this year. That kind of track record should ensure April gets a job soon in the NFL.
"That's easy for you to say. I dont know." he told us. "I hope that's correct, because I certainly want to keep coaching."
