ORCHARD PARK, NY (WIVB) - The BIlls went shopping at the 3-4 store, and bought a linebacker and now, a defensive end. The team has officially signed Dwan Edwards, who spent his first six seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.
Edwards visited on Tuesday, along with linebacker Andra Davis. Davis signed Tuesday afternoon. Both are players who have spent most of their careers in the 3-4, the defense that the Bills will switch to this season.
ESPN reports that Edwards' deal is 4 years and worth a maximum of $18 million dollars.
Edwards is 6-3, 290 pounds. He is a classic 3-4 defensive end, asked to tie up blockers so the linebackers can make the tackles. Because of that, Edwards has not compiled big statistics. He has just two career sacks.
But he will be a good fit with the new defense. Edwards will compete with Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson to start at the two defensive end positions. Stroud has never played that position in a 3-4, and Johnson has been a 4-3 defensive tackle through his Buffalo career.
Edwards missed the 2008 season after having neck surgery to fuse to vertebra togethers. But he says the injury is fine, didn't effect him in 2009 and was checked-out by Bills team doctors.
Edwards joins Davis and offensive tackle Cornell Green as the veteran free agents signed by the Bills.
