Bills fire Coach Chan Gailey

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Buffalo Bills announced late Monday morning that Chan Gailey is no longer head coach of the team.

The announcement came via Twitter when the team tweeted  "Chan Gailey has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Buffalo #Bills".

At a press event Monday, Gailey read a prepared statement. He praised fans, calling Buffalo a "great football town." Gailey said he understands the decision, because he didn't get the job done.  Gailey said this will be the first team that fired him that he'll still root for.

At the press event, Gailey said the coaching staff has been relieved of their duties as well.

News 4 Sports Director Steve Vesey reports that Bills players did not know Gailey have been fired, when the team had its meeting Monday morning. Vesey says there was huge player support in the locker room before Gailey's firing. The players also acknowledged there would have to be changes with 6-10 season.

The BIlls have failed to make the playoffs for 13th straight years, the NFL's longest active drought.

Gailey was made the head coach of the Bills in January of 2010.   He leaves the team after a disappointing 6-10 season and a career 16-32 record with the Bills.

Gailey was not the only head coach fired Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns have all announced firings of head coaches. The New York Jets, Browns and Jags fired their general managers.

According to AP, there was no immediate word on the status of general manager Buddy Nix.
