BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - The new United Football League held its first draft on Thursday night.  J.P. Losman was not picked, because he's already been assigned to a team.  ESPN's Chris Mortenson reports that Losman will play for the Las Vegas franchise, coached by former Giants bost Jim Fassel.  The former Bills quarterback has not had any interest in the NFL free agency market.  With those rosters mostly set, Losman may see the UFL as his best chance to resurrect  his career.  Losman was among a number of higher-profile player who were assigned to one of the league's four teams. An official announcement by the UFL and the Las Vegas team is expected July 1st.

Attempts to reach Losman's agent for comment were unsuccessful.

Losman left the Bills as an unrestricted free agent in March.  The team made no attempt to sign him, and Losman had made it clear that he did not want to backup Trent Edwards.  During five years with the Bills, started 33 games.  He wound up throwing 33 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions.  His inconsistent career in Buffalo will probably be remembered for mistakes such as his fumble that the cost the Bills a win in New York against the Jets in December.

The UFL held its player draft on Thursday night.  It mostly included former NFL players, but a few notable names like Adam Archuleta and Jermaine Wiggins.

Former U.B. Bulls offensive lineman Ray Norell was selected by the New York franchise.

Former Bills DT Larry Tripplett was drafted by the Orlando team.  The son of former Bills Hall of Famer James Lofton was picked by New York.

The UFL will begin play in four cities (Las Vegas, Orlando, New York, San Francisco.)  The games will be played in the fall.

Among the coaches, in addition to Fassel, are former Bill Jim Haslett (Orlando) and former Bills assistant Ted Cottrell (New York).
