Buffalo, NY - It’s another crack at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, for former Bills great Andre Reed.
He is one of 15-finalists for election to the Hall and the vote comes next Saturday, the day before the Super Bowl.
News 4 Sports talked to Reed this week, and to the man who will make his case for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Reed’s got the numbers and the big game performances. But he is yet to get the call from the Hall. And he says part of the problem, is that wide receivers are over-looked by the electors.
“Well, there's only what--21-receivers out of 267 guys, there's only 21-receivers in the Hall of Fame,” Reed tells News 4 Sports. “I think we just get more scrutinized for some reason. And this is what I'm reading and what I'm hearing from other people--that wide receivers get more scrutinized at our position, than any other position."
Reed is one of three wideouts in the field of 15-finalists for the Hall this year. Tim Brown of the Raiders and Cris Carter of the Vikings are the others.
Sportswriter Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News, who will present Reed's case for induction, says the three may split the vote.
"That’s the problem,” Gaughan says. “That's why Andre is in his sixth year now, hopefully he is getting closer, and hopefully he'll get in. But when you have numerous good candidates at a position, the worry is that they split the vote, and kinda knock each
other out."
We asked Andre Reed what his strongest argument is, for inclusion in the Hall.
"If I had to make a case for myself,” he said, “I mean, I played on championship teams. I think that would probably be the biggest things. I mean, stats, are gonna be stats."
Reed is up for election for the seventh time. But Gaughan thinks he may have a chance this time.
"I think his chances are getting better, and I am guardedly optimistic. You want me to put a number on it? Ok, I would say they have improved to the fifty fifty range."
"I just sit back and let the chips fall where they may, man.” Reed said. “I'm not gonna go jump off a bridge or do something crazy if it doesn't happen. I'd be disappointed, but you're only disappointed because of the way it went--you're not disappointed because you have no control over what they do."
