Indianapolis, In. - It’s been called the “Underwear Olympics.”
The NFL Combine features more than 330 draft prospects in shorts and t-shirts, running, jumping, shuttling around. They get weighed and measured. They take intelligence tests, psychological tests, and they’re quizzed on their football IQ.
And the combine is very valuable to the Buffalo Bills and all 31-other teams in the NFL. As the combine winds down, the Bills get to talk to some very impressive talent and get more information on whether they can help the team. The Bills decision makers say there’s no shortage of talent as this year’s combine.
“I think there’re more offensive tackles throughout the draft than normal,” Bills GM Buddy Nix tells News 4 Sports. “Normally there are a lot of guards and maybe some centers, but I think there’s more tackles. I think there are more corners and I think the corners are good, the linebackers are good.“
The Bills will be leaving the combine with a better idea of the prospects available in the draft, which is now just two months away. But as they build their 2012 team, Buffalo seems to already have a couple of key pieces in place--at quarterback and Defensive Coordinator.
“With Fitz, they finally have a quarterback that they can count on, “former Bills GM and Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian told News 4 Sports. “That’s a huge step in the right direction.”
“Dave Wannstedt is a coordinator who knows what he wants on defense,” Polian said, “knows how to construct it. He knows the kind of players that can play in his defense, and they are perhaps a little different than some others would use, and that’s a benefit.”
News 4 Sports asked Bills Coach Chan Gailey what his expectations are for the 2012 season.
“Win the championship,” he said. “That’s my expectation every year. That’s the goal-to win a championship. And if I don’t have that goal, what kind of leader am I? The goal every year is to win a championship, and I don’t expect anything less than that.”
The media portion of the NFL combine wrapped up late Sunday. Testing and workouts for the draft prospects continue through Tuesday.
