DETROIT (WIVB) - What a way to make sure the coaches notice. Williamsville's Dan Gronkowski, a rookie tight end fighting for a roster spot, caught the winning touchdown in the Lions 18-17 preseason win over the Colts.
It was the only catch of the game for the Williamsville North High School grad. The 21 yard pass from Drew Stanton was caught by Gronkowski at the two-yard line. He fought threw two tacklers to just cross the goal line and score the TD. The Lions made a two-point converstion for the winning points.
After the game, Dan made these comments to the Detroit Free Press:
"Drew and I have actually been doing that a lot in practice, so it felt good to get out there and do it in a game. I found myself at about the 1-yard line and a couple of DBs ragging on me, so I just pushed a little and reached over the goal line and scored the touchdown."
Its Gronkowski's third catch in the first three games of the preseason. He is fighting for a spot on the Lions 53 man roster. Detroit used a first round pick on another tight end, Brandon Pettigrew.
Gronkowski's last chance to impress the Detroit coaches will come in his hometown. The Lions and Bills finish the preseason on Thursday night at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
