BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Life hasn't always been easy for Jake Simmons, so he used basketball to help him focus. Those hours in the gym paid off last week, when Simmons broke Randy Smith's all-time scoring record at Buffalo State.

Simmons had to deal with his mother's death, a severe car accident, and eligibility concerns over the last few years. Through it all, basketball kept him on track.

"Basketball was the thing that kept me going," said Simmons. "It kept me focused on something, gave my life purpose."

To hear more on Jake's story, check out the video link from Tuesday's News 4 Sports at 6pm.
