SPRINGFIELD, MASS (AP) -

Lamont Jones scored 33 points and Sean Armand 24 to give Iona an 89-85 victory over Canisius in Saturday’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference quarterfinals.

Jones made all 14 of his free throws and Armand was 11 of 12 for the fourth-seeded Gaels (18-13), who will play top-seeded Niagara in Sunday’s semifinals. Twelve of Jones’ free throws came in the final 7:35, and consecutive layups by Jones and Taaj Ridley gave Iona an 82-77 lead with 59 seconds left.

The Gaels made 34 of 40 free throws (85 percent), while the fifth-seeded Golden Griffins (18-13) were 12 of 21 (57.1 percent) from the line.

Three-pointers nearly helped Canisius make up the difference. They shot 47.8 percent (11 of 23) behind the arc to Iona’s 27.8 percent (5 of 18).

Billy Baron led the Golden Griffins with 24 points and made 4 of 7 3-pointers. Harold Washington added 17 points.
