Ralph Wilson Stadium - They will be on opposite sidelines Sunday in Orchard Park. And when you think about it, Jets Coach Rex Ryan and Bills Coach Chan Gailey are at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to coaching styles.
Gailey might be "the Anti-Rex"
Ryan is big, brash and loud. He makes bold predictions, like the one he made at the NFL combine last February.
“I believe this is the year we are going to win the Super Bowl,” Ryan said back then.
Then there’s the Bills Chan Gailey. He’s quiet and calm, and he makes no predictions.
"Shoot, I don't even think about that stuff. I really don't." Gailey said Wednesday.
Rex Ryan’s news conferences feature costumes and props. Gailey’s feature his trademark sleeveless windbreaker.
In so many ways, these two coaches are polar opposites. For proof, just ask Gailey if he’s noticed how opposite they are.
"I don't pay attention," he told News 4 Sports.
There are two current Bills who are experts on the Gailey-Ryan coaching contrast. Dwan Edwards played for Ryan with the Ravens. Brad Smith spent the last two years playing for Ryan with the Jets."
Edwards talked about the differences in coaching styles.
"Rex is definitely a little more outspoken,” he said. “He'll tell you how he feels. Chan has his own way, kind of soft spoken, stays in the background.”
We asked Edwards, could Gailey be any more different than Ryan?
“I know, they’re complete opposites."
Bills WR Brad Smith played the last two years with Rex Ryan as his Head Coach in New York.
"It's different,” he said. “Rex is the guy who runs around in practice chest-bumping guys--joking around. Chan is not that type. Different styles, different people. Everybody does their thing."
Gailey had the Bills on the outdoor practice field Wednesday. Wide receiver Donald Jones was able to get in some limited work. He's missed the last two games with a high ankle sprain.
Defensive tackle Kyle Williams will be out this week. He says doctors will run tests on his injured foot next Monday and he'll have a better idea then on when, or if, he'll be able to return.
