'Glorified walkthrough' upsets Gailey

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WIVB) - Bills Head Coach Chan Gailey left Tuesday's training camp practice less-than-pleased, after the team wrapped up its final public practice before Thursday's preseason opener.

"Mentally, we were sort of into it," said Gailey. "I did not think, it is the first time in quite a while that we have not been in pads, and I thought guys thought it was a glorified walk-through. We have to make sure we learn how to practice without pads on, so we have to up the tempo on that a little bit."

Back-ups received most of the playing time in practice, which is expected to carry over into Thursday's preseason opener against Washington.  Gailey said the starters are expected to play 15-18 plays.

Rookie cornerback Stephon Gilmore and receiver Derek Hagan got into a small tussle during practice, but the incident did not escalate into anything serious.

"It happens," said Gailey. "Everybody is competitive. This is an edge sport. You have to be a little on edge to play it. It happens from time to time and you just can not let it get out of control."

Arthur Moats has been elevated into a starting role at outside linebacker, where he is now battling Kirk Morrison for the job. Chris Hairston, who has been splitting time with rookie Cordy Glenn at left tackle, will play right tackle Thursday night in place of Erik Pears, who is recovering from offseason surgery.

The Bills host Washington Thursday at 7pm from Ralph Wilson Stadium.
