The Randolph Cardinals are rolling to Syracuse and a spot in the NYS class D finals. Randolph beat Groton 61-8 in Rochester on Friday. The Cardinals will play at the Carrier Dome next Saturday against Moriah.
The Cardinals never attempted or completed a pass. But they ran for 601 yards and had two backs top 200 yards. Matt Hettenbaugh had 228 yards and 2 TD. Alan Lockwood had 220 yards and 4 TD. Travis Terry scored twice.
Groton was ranked number one in the state in class D.
The Sweet Home Panthers beat Whitesboro 36-13 in the class A playoffs on Friday night. North Tonawanda and Southwestern play Saturday. Sweet Home and Southwestern are defending state champions looking for a repeat.
Jahann Williams caught a TD pass and returned an interception for a touchdown.
Randolph won the state championship in 2005, the only one in school history.
Cardinals player Tyler Mendell was injured in the first quarter. He was taken off on a stretcher with an apparent knee injury. The other Randolph players honored their teammate by writing his number 20 on their helmets at halftime.
Randolph led 28-0 at halftime, and scored 27 points in the third quarter.
