Islanders claim Finley from Buffalo

Played in five games for Sabres last year

The Sabres lost a bit of depth along the blue-line Monday, with the New York Islanders claiming defenseman Joe Finley off waivers.

Finley, a former first-round pick by Washington, was primarily minor-league depth in the Buffalo organization, spending most of his time playing with the AHL's Rochester Americans.

At 6'8", Finley struck an imposing figure, but only played in five games for Buffalo.

The waiver-wire claim does present a problem, though, since fellow defenseman T.J. Brennan would also have to clear waivers if the Sabres wanted to send him back to the minors. Brennan is more of a prospect than Finley at this point, meaning he would almost certainly get claimed by another team if the Sabres tried to sneak him through the waiver process.
