ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - After months of saying the Bills had two starting running backs, Head Coach Chan Gailey now says the team has just one. C.J. Spiller will be the starter Sunday, even with Fred Jackson returning from a concussion.
Jackson passed the league's concussion tests and is fully cleared for this Sunday's game. Gailey says he will still play a big role in the offense, but Spiller will get the majority of the playing time.
The announcement is a departure from the even split the team has talked about for much of the season.
"It’s not like we aren’t going to use number 22 (Fred Jackson)," said Spiller. "We are going to use him. He is a playmaker on our team and he’s a leader on our team so like I said I’m just going to go out there when my number is called try and help my team win. Nothing really is going to change the way that I prepare now that I am going to be starting on Sunday."
Spiller is averaging 6.6 yards per carry this season, compared to 4.0 for Jackson - although Jackson has missed several games with a knee injury, then a concussion.
"All I can do is go out there and take advantage of the opportunities I'm given," said Jackson. "People are going to want different people out there... you can't focus on that."
The Bills travel to Indianapolis this Sunday to take on the Colts.
