Nagging wrist slows Super Mario

Mario Williams dealing with injury

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - The injury isn't bad enough for Mario Williams to miss practice time, or even land on the Bills' injury report, but his wrist is clearly bothering him early in the season.

Williams has just nine tackles and 1.5 sacks in the team's first four games, after signing that record-setting $100 million contract in the offseason.

"I have to have more impact, more of a role in things and get back to playing like I used to play," said Williams.

Williams first injured his wrist late in the preseason, but it has not healed as quickly as he had hoped.

"I am a hands-on player. It is all about power with my game," said Williams. "It has just been a little odd having a little nick or not being able to use it to the full extent. You have to play. When you are out there on Sunday you have to play regardless of what is going on the field. You have to make it happen. The biggest thing in just finding ways to heal and get out there and play at full speed."

Bills Head Coach Chan Gailey admitted today, he'd like Williams's numbers to be better, but he also said you can't blame his lack of production entirely on him.

"I think what happens a lot of times is that there is a great deal of respect for him," said Gailey. "They chip him and put a couple of guys on him. Bang him around in there. Can he play better? Yeah, he can play better but there is a lot of guys that fall in that category. There is a lot of guys that can play better. I can coach better. Everybody can do better."

The Bills travel to San Francisco this weekend to take on the 49ers - the first of two straight games out west.
