New York, NY (wivb.com) - Niagara Falls product and Syracuse standout, Jonny Flynn, is headed to the NBA. Thursday night the Minnesota Timberwolves selected Flynn with the 6th overall pick in the 1st Round.
Flynn, a 6'-0" point guard, becomes the first Syracuse player to be drafted in the top 10 since 2003, when Denver took Carmelo Anthony. He's the first Western New York player taken since Christian Laettner, from Angola, who was drafted third overall in 1992, by the same Minnesota Timberwolves.
Flynn led Syracuse in scoring his Sophomore year, averaging 17.4 points and 6.7 assists per game. He was co-east Rookie of the Year in the Big East his Freshman year.
Minnesota drafted another guard the pick before Flynn, selecting 18-year-old Ricky Rubio of Spain.
Flynn's teammate at Niagara Falls and Syracuse, Paul Harris, was not drafted.
