BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Alumni Plaza is coming to life outside First Niagara Center, with the first plaques going into place Tuesday.

The two living members of the team's famed French Connection line, Rene Robert and Gilbert Perreault, were on hand to add their names to the brick pillars today.

The plaques are the first step toward transforming the area outside the arena. The Sabres will be adding a statue honoring the French Connection next Friday.

"This is the greatest honor an athlete can get," said Robert. "You talk about Hall of Fame or whatever. When you're being recognized in the city you played by the ownership as being icons... this is certainly icing on the cake."

Next week's statue unveiling is scheduled for Friday, October 12th.
