BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - The Sabres only waited about two hours once free agency began to sign their first player. The team has announced an agreement with veteran defenseman Steve Montador. The 30 year old is six foot tall, 210 pounds.
TSN reports that its a two year deal worth $1.55 million per season.
Montador played last year with Anaheim and Boston. He was traded at the deadline from the Ducks to the Bruins. His previous stops have come in Carolina and Florida. Last season, Montador totaled 4 goals, 17 assistst, a +17 and 143 penalty minutes.
Montador's signing likely means that Jaroslav Spacek will not return. The Sabres defenseman are now Montador, Craig RIvet, Chris Butler, Toni Lydman, Henrik Tallinder and Nathan Paetsch. Andrej Sekera is a restricted free agent and will likely return. Mike Weber could compete for a spot, and so could Tyler Myers, last year's first round draft pick.
