BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - For the third time in four seasons, the Sabres early season success was ruined by the Atlanta Thrashers.  Buffalo lost 4-2 at home, their first regulation loss of the season.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice, Max Afinogenov scored in his return to Buffalo, and Johan Hedberg continued his mastery of Buffalo.

The Sabres goals were scored by Clarke MacArthur and Drew Stafford.  Pattick Lalime started his first game of the season, and gave up four goals on 27 shots.

The Thrashers are off to their best start in team history.  The Sabres are now 4-1-1.

In 2006, Buffalo had won its first 10 games before losing to Atlanta.  In 2008, they won their first four before a loss to the Thrashers.

Hedberg has dominated the Sabres in his career, with an 11-2-1 record.

Thomas Vanek did not play with a rib injury.  Adam Mair played his first game of the season.

The Sabres next play Wednesday in Florida.
