KANATA, ONTARIO - Jason Pominville was a shaning star. Luke Adam a slapshot powerhouse. But it was a Buffalo native, not a Buffalo Sabre, who stole the show at the NHL All-Star Skills Competition in Ottawa.
Pominville mastered the target shooting as part of the Skills Challenge Relay. He was even better in the Elimination Shootout. Pominvile scored twice, and made it the finals before getting stopped by Jimmie Howard. That allowed Steven Stamkos to win the event.
Adam fired a 98 mile an hour slapshot during the Hardest Shot Competition. As impressive as that was for the Buffalo rookie, it was overwhelmed by winner Zdeno Chara's 108 mile an hour blast.
Pominville's performance helped Team Alfredsson beat Team Chara to win the title.
But the star of the night was Buffalo native Pat Kane. The Blackhawks forward won the Breakaway Challenge by using some props. First, he put on a Superman cape and Clark Kent glasses for a breakaway attempt. He dove on the ice and scored while reaching his stick to the right after pushing the puck with his left hand. Kane then topped that by using an exploding puck for his next attempt.
While Adam won't take part, Pominville and Kane will play in the All-Star game on Sunday afternoon.
