BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - It's the announcement Sabres fans have been fearing. The NHL is now canceling the first two weeks of the regular season, as that lingering lock out puts hockey in limbo.

All games in the start of the season between October 11th and 24th are canceled. That means a total of 82 regular season games have been dropped.

The Sabres are slated to play five games during this period, four were scheduled to be home games at the First Niagara Center.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly released a statement saying in part, “We remain committed to doing everything in our power to forge an agreement that is fair to the players, fair to the teams and good for our fans.”

Sabres fan Steve Holliday said, "In today's economy, you know people are having a rough time out there, so it's hard to be sympathetic to somebody that's making hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars."

On News 4’s Facebook page, Sabres fan Stephanie writes, "What the heck are we all supposed to do for the cold winter?"

Sabres fan Mark writes, "I'm glad I am old enough to remember when playing hockey or any other sport was for the love of the game, not the size of your bank account."

This is the third time since 1994 that the NHL will not start as scheduled because of a lockout. In the 1994-95 season was lost due to a labor dispute.
