Sabres routed in Detroit

DETROIT (WIVB) - This Sabres season of disappointment hit a new low on Monday night in Detroit.  Buffalo lost 5-0 in a game where they were completely outplayed and outclassed.  The defeat is their ninth straight on the road, and tenth in their last 14 games overall.

The Red Wings win sets a new team record with their 15th straight home victory.

Detroit jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead on goals by Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Niklas Lidstrom.  The final two goals came 1:32 apart in the final two minutes of the period.  They continued to pour it on in the second, knocking out Ryan Miller.  Todd Bertuzzi (1 goal, 2 assists) scored to make it 4-0, and off the faceoff :13 seconds later, Darren Helm chased Miller with the game's fifth goal.  Pavel Datsyuk had three assists.

Jhonas Enroth took over in goal.  Jimmy Howard made 27 saves for his fifth shutout of the season.

The Sabres had chances to score in the first period, but once again, could not connect.  Drew Stafford, Thomas Vanek and Ville Leino all were alone in front of Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard, but could not score.  They have now scored two or fewer goals in ten of their last thirteen games.

The Sabres defense also struggled, with Mike Weber and Jordan Leopold both on for four goals.  The team did get defenseman Andrej Sekera back from his injury.  He had missed the last eight games.

Sabres owner Terry Pegula was in attendance at the game, the Sabres second on a seven game road trip.  They play in Chicago on Wednesday.
