RALEIGH, N.C. (WIVB) - After a quiet first period, goals came fast and furious in the second frame Thursday night, with Carolina picking up its first win of the season 6-3 over the Sabres.
The Hurricanes tallied a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second period behind Jeff Skinner's first goal of the night and Justin Faulk's shorthanded strike.
Buffalo would answer with a pair of goals in a two-minute span. Cody Hodgson registered his third goal of the season after crashing the net on a rebound. Jason Pominville found the net, tipping in Christian Ehrhoff's shot.
Carolina came right back, scoring twice in a matter of nine seconds. Skinner put up his second goal of the evening on a wrap-around from behind the net. Eric Staal snuck behind the defense for goal number four for Carolina.
Buffalo briefly cut the lead back to one, off a pretty feed from Thomas Vanek to Pominville for his second goal of the game.
Eric Staal would strike again to push the lead to 5-3. He added an empty-netter to complete the hat trick and second Buffalo to its first loss of the season.
Jhonas Enroth started at goalie for the Sabres, stopping 32 shots.
These two teams will meet again tomorrow night in Buffalo at 7pm.
