NFL Scouting Combine - The new coach of the Washington Redskins talked to the Bills late last year, about coaching in Buffalo. But Mike Shanahan told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine he was scared off, by the weather.
News 4 Sports asked Shanahan Friday morning about his discussions with the Bills in late November and early December of last year. We asked how serious the talks were, and how much consideration he gave to the Buffalo head coaching job.
"There was strong consideration. I think it's an excellent organization, very well run. I enjoyed my conversation with them. But at the end of the day, it was not something that , uh, I want to put it in the right words--If I went to Buffalo to live there, from a family perspective, I think I would be the only one that would go. My wife and kids weren't going with me. That's strictly the weather, strictly to do with the weather, that's it. But now in Washington, we had 40-inches in a few days, so...."
Shanahan met with Bills President Russ Brandon late last year, after Head Coach Dick Jauron was dismissed in mid-November. He was never considered a serious candidate for the Buffalo vacancy. Most NFL observers believed he was waiting for an offer from a higher profile NFL team, and he got one when the Redskins contacted him about their vacancy.
The 57-year old coach spent 14-seasons as Head Coach of the Denver Broncos, and won two Super Bowls in Denver. He was fired after the 2008 season and spent the 2009 campaign on the sidelines.
We'll have more on Shanahan's comments and show them to you tonight on News 4 at Five and Six.
