BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - Randy Smith is a Buffalo State basketball legend.  He set the school’s all-time points record and went on to a 10 year career in the NBA, now that record has been broken.

Buffalo State senior, Jake Simmons, was just 33 points shy of Randy Smith’s record of 1,712 career points before Friday night's matchup against Penn Central. It was a record Simmons never set out to break but he scored an career high 43 points.

Lauren Brill spoke to Simmons before Friday's matchup. “To be considered even in the same conversation as this guy, Randy Smith, it’s a dream beyond a dream,” said Simmons. “I didn’t even set my goals this high and to get this high makes me feel like I really accomplished something with my life.”

Fajri Ansari, Buffalo State Basketball coach tells Lauren Brill, “ I would never thought to be a Buffalo State coach and have a player that would be on the verge of breaking his record.  Bear in mind there was no three pointer shots when he was playing. To be six points into his senior year and Jake to be at this point is really a major accomplishment."
