INDIANAPOLIS (WIVB) - Former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o says the topic comes up in every interview. NFL teams want to know the real story behind Te'o's infamous relationship with a girl who never existed.
"They want to be able to trust their player," said Te'o. "You don't want to invest in somebody you can't trust."
The Bills are one of 20 teams who have interviews lined up with Te'o at the NFL Combine. Bills general manager Buddy Nix says the majority of his evaluations will involve Te'o's performance on the field.
"We evaluate that guy as a football player, and that's the way we're going to do it," said Nix. "Obviously, it'll probably be mentioned and let him explain it, but if he's a good enough player, he made a mistake, it's not like he's a criminal."
Nix says he likes Te'o as a player and considers him to be a three-down linebacker.
Either way, Te'o says he is ready to move past this embarrassing chapter of his life and focus on football.
"Hopefully after this, I answered the things I need to answer and we can move on with football," said Te'o.
