BERKELEY, CA (WIVB) - Former U.B. Bulls starter Zach Maynard has been named the starting quarterback at the University of California. Head Coach Jeff Tedford made that announcement on Saturday, two weeks after the conclusion of the Bear's spring practice.
Maynard was the Bulls #1 signalcaller in 2009, taking over for Drew Willy. He threw for 18 TD and 15 interceptions, leading U.B. to a 5-7 record under Turner Gill.
When Gill left and Jeff Quinn took over, Maynard decided to transfer. That decision was also dictated by Maynard's desire to play with his brother, top recruit Keenan Allen. In what appeared to be a package deal, the Bears got Allen and also took Maynard, who made the unusual move from the Mid American Conference to the PAC 10.
Maynard had to sit out a season, which he did in 2010.
Tedford explained the decision by citing Maynard's running ability.
"Zach showed a tremendous amount of upside during spring practice and is the quarterback that gives us the best opportunity to win football games," said Tedford. "He has the ability to both throw and run the ball effectively, giving us another dimension at that position that we haven't had in a while."
The Bears open their season, and Maynard makes his debut, on September 3rd against Fresno State.
