NORTHEAST (AP) - Maine's major utilities are making headway on power restorations as the big storm swatting the Northeast works its way east.

Central Maine Power and Bangor Hydro-Electric say their total outage figure is around 6,200, roughly half of what it was a few hours earlier.

Maine was much harder hit than New Hampshire and Vermont. The Granite State has a few hundred customers without service, and virtually everyone has power in Vermont.

Snow totals vary across the region, with a record-setting 29.3 inches measured at the Portland, Maine, jetport, nearly 33 inches in Gorham, Maine, 33 inches in Chichester, N.H., and 16 inches in Springfield, Vt.
