Smartphones lessen the need for texting

(CNN) — For the first time ever, text messaging is on the decline.

The reason? Smartphones.

Since they are Internet-enabled devices, smartphones allow users to bypass the traditional texting plans offered by wireless companies and use device-to-device messaging capabilities.

To avoid the financial blow, some carriers are starting to change their business strategies, introducing shared data plans.
