AUSTIN (KXAN) - For many, Halloween is a time for festive parties, costumes and candies.
Others, however, believe it's a time when the veil to the spirit world is thinned and therefore allows the spirit world to be contacted easier.
And though the skeptics may simply brush off the subject altogether, Celebrity Psychic Belinda Bentley said there are precautions nonetheless to keep in mind for those thinking of dabbling into the unknown.
"It's like people who don't even believe in this stuff, they will literally make a party, have a Ouija board out and have tarot cards out," said Bentley. "It's definitely just important, just don't play around with the negative aspects of it."
The paranormal investigator from Sacramento, Calif. said the holiday itself brings out a certain spirit amongst everyone because it's gotten into such a collective consciousness.
"The biggest safety you can have is to go into it with an open mind," said Bentley. "Celebrating it and having a lot of fun with it is probably one of the best ways to protect yourself."
Having the ability since childhood, Bentley uses her intuition and natural psychic skills in her investigations - which come on a weekly basis. She said sometimes it even comes four or fives times in a day, taking on the most extreme.
What's extreme? Bentley said anything involving children, scared animals, poltergeist activity or abandoned locations where people need to work to make a living but are scared out of doing so.
"I'm scared of people. I'm not scared of spirits," said Bentley with a laughter. "I love it. I love what I do."
She's been in the business for a decade and works year-round, only taking off a week to attend the Burning Man Festival that takes place on a Native American reservation.
In a world where Bentley said people have had serious documented cases of problems after contact with "the other side," it's enough to cause some alarm to have at least some safety procedures in place.
From bringing in mediums to do a seance, to doing the Ouija board with friends, Bentley said there are ways to keep kids and adults safe during Halloween.
