Mash-up splices this year's hits into one video

DJ Earworm, well known for his epic mash-ups, has just released his 2010 creation, which features 25 of this year’s most popular songs– according to Billboard Magazine .

Earworm snips the music and images from these 25 hits and blends them into one seamless jam. It’s so popular that DJ Earworm’s site was broken temporarily by the amount of traffic it received after the release.

No matter what you were listening to in 2010, this mix gives a glimpse into the overall scheme of pop music for the past year– lots of Gaga, Katy Perry and KE$ha, just to name a few.

Although not personally a fan of some of Billboard’s picks, I definitely find myself thinking more seriously about the why these songs are so popular. What makes something a "hit?" What makes it not?

Even though Earworm may not be as prolific as Girl Talk in his mash-ups, who takes music that is not only just on the Top 40, but random clips from other bands– like Neutral Milk Hotel or Elastica, and mashes it up with, oh say, Missy Elliot; or Wings, even, and mixes it with 2 Live Crew, which creates a completely different message all together from the original compositions– his musical cornucopias are danceable, fun and a good picture of pop culture today.

Earworm, however, makes this clean mix with intent to showcase what millions of people have loved, danced to and downloaded over the course of 2010. It’s retrospective look at the year in a good way, when so many of us seem to be glad it’s over.

How well do you know these artists? Can you guess each song and snippet? (List provided by Billboard Magazine after the video)
